Dr. Laura Schweitzer accepted a nomination to the Board of Directors of Catskill Hudson Area Health Education Center (Catskill Hudson AHEC).  Catskill Hudson AHEC is a non-profit organization that addresses healthcare workforce shortages by promoting healthcare career education and awareness throughout an eleven county region, which includes Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Rockland, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster.  Catskill Hudson AHEC is one of nine AHECs in New York State.

Dr. Schweitzer has been employed as the Chief Academic Officer of Bassett Healthcare since 2007, and is charged with the creation of a geographically separated two year medical school campus based in Cooperstown, NY as an established affiliate of an existing medical school.  Previously, she was the Vice President for Academic Affairs/SUNY Upstate - Vice Provost and Health Liaison/Syracuse University.  She received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis in 1979, completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University, Department of Neurobiology and was subsequently appointed Research Faculty at Duke.  In 1988, Dr. Schweitzer joined the University of Louisville, School of Medicine.  In 1996, she was appointed Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and, while retaining that title, she was also named Associate Dean for Student Affairs and then Associate Vice President for Health Affairs in 1999.  She has published over 45 articles.  In 2003, after having served as Dean of Allied Health she was promoted to Vice Dean in the School of Medicine and was named the first University of Louisville Presidential Fellow.  At the end of her year as fellow in December 2003, the President of the University, James Ramsey, named Dr. Schweitzer Interim Dean of Medicine.
