CHAHEC Events
  • Who should attend:  All health professionals (Physicians, Dentists, Nurses, EMT/Paramedics, Mental Health Professionals, Allied Health Professionals) and support staff (Practice Managers, Medical Assistants, Receptionists, Staff Educators) – anyone who has direct contact with patients, clinical and non-clinical.  The objective of this program is to educate all healthcare providers in all healthcare professions of health risks, threats and barriers relating to the LGBT community and to adopt LGBT culture-friendly practices.  LGBT people experience health issues and barriers related to their sexual orientation  and/or gender identity or expression. Many avoid or delay care or receive inappropriate or inferior care because of negative personal experience, the assumption or expectation of negative experience based on the history of experiences by other LGBT people, or both.  Since LGBT people are members of every community and include people of all races, ethnicities, ages, socioeconomic statuses, their perspectives and needs should routinely be considered in public health efforts to improve the overall health of every person and eliminate health disparities.  It's important that they be treated by healthcare providers who appropriately inquire about their sexual behavior, are knowledgeable about their health risks, and have an understanding of their familial structure, to name a few. This program is appropriate for ALL Health professions and will focus on:
    • Enhancing self-awareness of healthcare practice attitudes toward the LGBT community.
    • Cultivating an understanding of how the LGBT community views, seeks out, and utilizes healthcare.
    • Improving healthcare for this population by increasing knowledge about the LGBT culture, family ties, and the burden of various diseases affecting this community.
    • Improving skills for improved communication between patient and healthcare provider (staff members included).
    • Discussion of social and legal barriers to health care access for LGBT people.
    • Providing a legal Q&A to alleviate any barriers of additional concerns.
A toolkit and reference guide will also be provided to attendees, which will include all healthcare providers and their staff.  This activity has been submitted to Pennsylvania State Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. Pennsylvania State Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. The New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services recognizes this Health Professions Summit for 5.5 hours. These hours must be applied to the "Additional" portion of the Continuing Medical Education based EMT/AEMT/EMT-P Recertification Program. To download the Brochure/Registraiton form, click HERE.
  • Historically, Catskill Hudson AHEC (CHAHEC) conducted two annual flagship programs: the Nursing Summit and the Emergency Responder Leadership Academy (formerly the EMS Leadership Academy).  Both programs have grown considerably over the past several years and have developed a strong following of healthcare professionals. These programs featured topics that were specific to their audience.  But, because the relevance and importance of this year's chosen topic is appropriate for all healthcare providers, the 2013 Nursing Summit and Emergency Responder Leadership Academy will be incorporated into a new program initiative entitled the Health Professions Summit and the title of the program is Improving Healthcare to LGBT Individuals and Families: Awareness to Action. Enrollment is open to all healthcare providers and their staff members. The Health Professions Summit 2013 will not preclude future Nursing Summits or Emergency Responder Leadership Academies.  Rather, it will be in addition to these two programs. Please see the outline and description for the Health Professions Summit Improving Healthcare to LGBT Individuals and Families: Awareness to Action, which will be held on May 17, 2013 at the Henry Wallace Center at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, NY.
